It’s “New 7 Wonders of the World Day”
in New York City!

Zurich/Switzerland, March 8, 2007—Continuing its global call to action, the New7Wonders World Tour visited the Statue of Liberty on Wednesday as the last of the 21 finalists in the campaign to choose the New 7 Wonders of the World. Students from the William C. McGinnis Middle School in Perth Amboy, NJ braved the cold to create a message on Liberty Island—a red-white-and-blue plea to “VOTE!” on behalf of Lady Liberty. New7Wonders Founder and President Bernard Weber gave the certificate of candidacy to Cynthia Garrett, the National Parks Service’s Superintendent of the Statue of Liberty National Monument and Ellis Island.

New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg has issued an official proclamation declaring March 7, 2007 to be “New 7 Wonders of the World Day” in the Big Apple.

On July 7, 2007 in Lisbon, Portugal, the winners will be announced during the gala Official Declaration of the New 7 Wonders of the World, broadcast live worldwide.

The World Tour launched at the Acropolis on Sept. 5, 2006 in a tribute to the ancient Greek origin of the Wonders of the World concept. Since the campaign’s launch, well over 28 million votes have been cast—testimony to the powerful appeal of this first-ever global vote and the first election in which children can participate.

The Statue of Liberty is a symbol of generosity and hope
After the handover ceremony, beloved New York performance artist “Living Liberty” (Jennifer Stewart) celebrated with the children wearing Liberty crowns, as well as Superintendent Garrett, Bernard Weber and Stephen A. Briganti, CEO of The Statue of Liberty – Ellis Island Foundation.

Bernard Weber: “New7Wonders is happy to have the finale of our World Tour here at the Statue of Liberty, the only finalist inspired by a Wonder of the Ancient World—the Colossus of Rhodes. Lady Liberty is also the only New7Wonders finalist that was a gift from one nation, France, to another as a gesture of support and friendship from one democracy to another.”

Have fun learning about cultural diversity and geography
New7Wonders launched a fun, downloadable map in the Kids & Schools section of www.new7wonders.com. Also, moved by the National Geographic Society’s 2002 report that American young people have glaring gaps in their knowledge of the world’s geography, New7Wonders has announced a contest for U.S. schools (see separate release).
